A heat pump simply transfers the heat contained in the outside air inside your home. It uses the same refrigeration cycle as your refrigerator (hot part).
Make sure you have a clean filter in the ventilation cabinet (furnace) at all times. A dirty filter will cause performance problems for the heat pump.
Each residence has a point of balance depending on the performance of the heat pump as well as the energy performance of the house. The heat pump alone will assume the heating needs as long as the balance point is not reached.
